The Faculty of Pharmacy at the Albacete Campus is exploring, thanks to the award of a Teaching Innovation Project by the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM), the use of short videos in the purest TikTok style to improve the teaching-learning process in the Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy.
The Degree in Pharmacy is a degree with a highly multidisciplinary approach, encompassing subjects of a markedly biosanitary nature (Pharmacology, Public Health, etc...) and subjects belonging to pure sciences (Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, etc...). The latter are the first ones that students encounter when they begin their studies. The extensive teaching experience of the Faculty's staff has allowed us to detect the difficulties students have in understanding key concepts in the correct learning of each of the different subjects, especially in the initial years of the Degree.
To try to tackle these difficulties, the Teaching Innovation Unit of the Faculty of Pharmacy proposed the use of content similar to social networks, specifically very concise videos about specific concepts, as an ideal way to connect with students immersed in a plethora of social networks. In order to reach more and better students, the videos, scripted by the teachers, are produced and recorded by the students. This crystallised in the teaching innovation project entitled "Preventive treatment for a successful start to the Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy: some knowledge pills", in which teachers and students of the degree have been involved in the development of this material. The videos are made available to students on the Virtual Campus of each subject, so that they can watch and reproduce them as many times as they consider necessary.
The project began in the 2021/2022 academic year with the carrying out of student surveys on the concepts that were most difficult for them to understand, which allowed us to identify the weaknesses of each specific subject and to focus the contents of the videos appropriately. However, its impact on academic results will be tested during the 2022/2023 academic year.
